Congleton gets ready to Switch on its Christmas Lights – Friday November 25th
The excitement is building as Congleton gets ready to turn on its Christmas lights on Friday 25th November. The fun starts at 4pm and continues until 7.30pm. The lights will be switched on at 5.30pm by Father Christmas and Becca from Becca’s Wish to Walk.
Local families have already starting making lanterns to carry in the procession and there’s an opportunity for more people to get creative and make lanterns on Saturdays 12th and 19th November. Call in at a workshop at the Electric Picture House on Cross Street (off Mill Street) between 11am – 4pm, a £1 donation towards the light would be appreciated.
The Congleton Christmas Lights event is organised by an enthusiastic group led by Congleton Town Council and Congleton Community Projects. Thousands are expected to attend on the night and can look forward to enjoying the Christmas atmosphere while being entertained by groups and individuals including Salt City Jazz Band, Marlfields School Choir, Spot lights Glee Club, Can’t Sing Choir, Congleton Pantomime, Sambamba band, Daisy and John, Joanne Bayley Elite Dancers and Megan Dixon Hood.
21 local charities and organisations will be raising funds from their stalls in the High Street and pedestrian area, while more than 25 fabulous quality gift and craft stalls will be in the Town Hall at the Quality Gift and Craft Fayre. Tasty treats will be on sale from a variety of hot food stalls and a giant 15 foot snow globe will be located on the pedestrian area where groups of up to 8 people can have their photo taken. There will be a couple of children’s rides in the High Street with the majority of rides located in the Fairground Car Park.
The High Street will be closed to traffic from 2pm – 9pm for the festivities. There will be no access to the High Street from Market Street, Moody Street or Canal Street. There will also be a temporary closure of Lawton Street between 5pm – 5.20pm for Santa’s Sleigh and the Grand Lantern Procession.
The Lights-Switch on event is sponsored by Congleton Town Council, Congleton Partnership, Congleton Town Trust, Congleton Inclosure Trust and the Young People’s Trust. The team is also grateful to the silver sponsors Senior Aerospace Bird Bellows.
Town Mayor, Cllr David Brown said: “Switching on the Christmas Lights is always a really special occasion in Congleton and one not to be missed! Congleton Town Council, Congleton Community Projects and others have worked hard to put on a fabulous event – so whatever the weather come into town and be part of this great community occasion.”
Many shops in town will be joining in the festive fun and staying open late – some putting on special offers and dressing their windows.
