After much water, sweat and tears of laughter, Congleton Rugby Club’s ‘Hotdogs’ team was crowned It’s a Knockout Champions at the games held in Congleton Park on Sunday.
20 local teams competed over large inflatables, battling with buckets of water and fountains of foam to complete daft tasks – all in the name of fun and entertainment! The day was organised by Team Congleton, a voluntary group supported by Congleton Town Council, which is helping the town to celebrate sport and have fun during the Olympic Year. A couple of thousand people turned out to enjoy the spectacle and support the teams.
Organiser, Glen Williams said; “It was a truly memorable, fun day and I would like to thank all the participating teams, everyone who came down to cheer on the teams, Team Congleton sponsors – and everyone who contributed to the day. Even the weather was on our side!”
Nine teams competed in the first round of competitions. This competition was won by the Mattroe Maulers, with the Rugby Colts coming second and Team Cardall gaining bronze medals. Eleven teams competed in the second competition which was won by the Hot Dog Team, with silver medals going to Hash Browns (Crewe Leisure Centre) and bronze to BoAlloy Running Club. A head to head dash to collect water over an inflatable obstacle course saw the Hot Dogs pip the Mattroe Maulers to the cup. Medals and the cup were awarded to the Teams by Team Congleton President, Ann Brightwell.
Following the success of the day Congleton Town Council has already received a number of requests from people wanting to see the event repeated next year. The event cost around £4,000 to put on. This year funding was raised via Team Congleton.
