Congleton Town Council will be supporting Plantlife’s annual ‘No Mow May’ campaign to let more wildflowers bloom to support bees and other pollinators.
In May, Streetscape Services run by the town council will be leaving some areas of the parks and open spaces it manages unmown. Streetscape will only cut and mow where it needs to on safety and contractual grounds.
Ruth Burgess, Streetscape Development Manager said:” Saying NO to the MOW fits with the Town Council’s green agenda. Changing our grass-cutting habits in May is a simple way to provide a more diverse landscape for wildlife such as birds, small mammals, and pollinating insects. We hope to encourage as many people as possible to lock up their mower’s and let their lawns grow to help nature.”
Ruth continues: “The current climate emergency presents the council and the community with challenges that we cannot ignore. Our parks and open spaces are valued in Congleton and used by hundreds of people. We will be working with Cheshire East Council to adopt more sustainable methods of managing our open spaces.”
The town council is inviting everyone to join in with a ‘selfie video’ campaign showing the impact of not mowing the lawn in May. Create a 20-second video (filmed on a phone is fine) and share on social media such as Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn with a short description and the hashtags #NoMowMay and #CongletonGreen. Video’s can be shared any time during the month. The council will re-share them and make a montage of some of them as a celebration at the end of each month.
Residents who would like to help make Congleton cleaner and greener are also invited to join Congleton in Bloom for their next Town Tidy on Saturday 7 May at Congleton Park from 10am-12 noon. As part of National Garden Week (2-8 May) the group are calling for volunteers to join in the fun event. Congleton in Bloom Chair, Cllr David Brown said: “There will be a variety of activities and volunteers can do as little or as much as they want!
