The Congleton Town Mayor’s Charity Ball on 14 March was a night to remember as 140 guests filled Congleton Town Hall for a glittering evening of celebration and fundraising. The event brought together a fantastic mix of civic guests, community groups, businesses, and members of the public, all united in their support of the mayor’s three chosen charities—MyCWA, Ruby’s, and Congleton Pride.
The evening began with a rousing “Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!” from Town Crier, Vicky Pulman, who served as the evening’s compère. Guests stood to welcome distinguished attendees, including four mayors from neighbouring towns and MP for Congleton, Sarah Russell. A warm round of applause greeted the arrival of Congleton Town Mayor, Cllr Kay Wesley, and her Consort, Mike Wesley.
The proceedings were formally opened with Mayor’s Cadet Barney Mitcheson leading the grace, followed by the loyal toast proposed by David McGifford, Chief Officer of the Town Council. Guests were treated to a delicious three-course meal prepared by Mark Bailey and his team at Mark’s Events.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the charity auction, where five exclusive prizes sparked a flurry of competitive bidding. Alongside an exciting raffle featuring 17 incredible prizes, the night’s fundraising efforts raised an impressive £2,884. A heartfelt thank you goes out to the local businesses whose generous donations made this possible.
In her speech, Town Mayor, Cllr Kay Wesley reflected on her mayoral theme of Equality and Inclusion, sharing her hope that Congleton is now a more inclusive place than when she took office. She highlighted key initiatives, including Congleton’s first fully inclusive Mayor’s Parade and Civic Service, the launch of the Mayor’s Civic Awards, improvements in disability access with a new Disability Welcome Scheme, and efforts to engage young people and local communities. She also welcomed Congleton’s Ukrainian guests, acknowledging the importance of inclusion during difficult times. Speaking about the chosen charities, she said:
“My three Mayor’s charities—MyCWA, Ruby’s, and Congleton Pride—are all about equality and inclusion. In an ideal world, they wouldn’t need to exist, but sadly, they are needed now more than ever. The work they do is truly life-changing, and I am so proud to support them. I want to thank everyone here tonight for their generosity in helping these fantastic causes—it really will make a difference.”
Cllr Suzy Firkin delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks to the mayor, praising Cllr Wesley’s, hard work, compassion, and unwavering commitment to equality and justice. She described Kay as a force of nature, inspiring and motivating those around her while tirelessly working for the people of Congleton, especially the most vulnerable.
“Kay has been a mayor who leads by example, an ambassador for community spirit, and a true champion for those in need. Her dedication and passion have made a real impact, and for that, we owe her our deepest thanks.”
With fundraising in full swing and spirits high, guests took to the dance floor as The Sound Party provided a fantastic evening of live entertainment, ensuring the celebration ended on a high note.
The final total raised, including all donations and contributions, will be announced once everything has been tallied up. The town council would like to thank all who attended, donated, and supported the event. The kindness and generosity of everyone involved will have a lasting impact on these vital local charities.
