At a packed Town Hall on Thursday 15 May, Councillor Denis Murphy was elected as the new Town Mayor and Cllr Liz Wardlaw as Deputy Town Mayor to serve Congleton Town until May 2015. Cllr Denis Murphy announced that Joan Myatt will be his Mayoress for the year, while Liz’s husband Bruce Wardlaw was appointed as Deputy Mayor’s Consort. Fourteen year old Nathan Beard from Congleton Fire Cadets will be the new Mayor’s Cadet, supporting the Town Mayor in many of his public engagements.
Cllr Murphy is already a well known in Congleton having served on the Town Council for the past eight years; He is not new to the role of Mayor, having served as the Town Mayor in 2008/9. He is President of The Rotary Club of Congleton and Chairman of the Congleton Community Credit Union. He is a Trustee and secretary of the League of Friends of Macclesfield & Congleton Hospitals and a Trustee of the Cheshire East Citizens Advice Bureau. He is Manager of St Mary’s Parish Centre and Chairman of Congleton Town PubWatch Cllr Murphy said he was very honoured to be chosen by his fellow councillors to serve as Mayor. He added: “I would like to pay credit to Cllr George Hayes for the hard work, effort and energy that he put into the role of Town Mayor last year. Being Mayor of a town like Congleton is a great privilege and comes with a packed diary! I am looking forward to meeting and supporting the numerous local groups and organisations which do so much to strengthen our town. During my year in office I will be raising funds for the Cheshire East Hospice as well as supporting local organisations benefiting young people in Congleton.
